Alivera had nine children, however two of them died when they were young. She is currently caring for six of her children and two of her grandchildren. During the 1994 Genocide she and her family moved to a refugee camp. In 2002, her husband became very ill due to his HIV, which he contracted through an extramarital relationship. Alivera continued to care for him until he passed away later that year. Alivera has been tested five times over the past several years and so far has not tested HIV+ herself. She is thankful to God for her new life and is thrilled to be at the 2nd grade level as she learns to read and write. Her favorite bible verse is Jeremiah 31:3, "The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: 'I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness.' "
